Only books actually in possession
and/or read by the author are referred here. The comments reflect my personal
opinion, which is changing over the time anyhow. The list is NOT in order
of preference, 'first come to mind, first serve' principle is applied.
A. Boat building
[A1]
Boatbuilding with Aluminum, Stephen F. Pollard, International Marine/Ragged
Mountain Press; 1 edition (1993) (ISBN: 0070504261)
Comments:
Possibly the best book on aluminium (aluminum) boat building, its a must,
however, 'In the Kingdom of the Blind, the Man with One Eye Is King'.
It has a lot of information, despite some are redundant and some are
missing. My recommendation, however, is to buy the book without
hesitation or need to check it in a library.
[A2]
Aluminum Boatbuilding, Ernest H. Sims, Sheridan House; 3rd edition (2000)
(ISBN: 1574091131)
Comments:
This book really does not have much practical details. It still gives
some info though and considering its one of the two books on the subject
available and with the price at around US$ 30 its probably a good investment.
[A3]
The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers, and Owners, Dave
Gerr, International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press; 1 edition (1999) (ISBN:
0070231591 )
Comments:
Despite the scantlings rules are possibly a bit peculiar and often a way
off with respect to, say, Lloyds, it is a very good book. I like it that
is. It has a lot of details which are difficult/impossible to find in
other books and some recommendations which are not even covered in Lloyds
rules. Its a good reference book when you simply dont know, dont want
to bother your designer and want to have a second opinion. My full recommendations.
[A4]
The Complete Guide to Metal Boats: Building, Maintenance, and Repair,
R. Bruce Roberts-Goodson , International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press;
1 edition (2000) (ISBN: 0071364447)
Comments:
For aluminium boat building... its useless.
[A5]
Germanischer Lloyd Rules
Comments: Just the best thing you can get
when building aluminium boat. If not sure about some welding detail, Lloyds
rules most likely will have that somewhere described. Its also free of
charge to download and it covers most of EN norms anyhow - which cost
a bomb. Its rather comprehensive though, and it takes some time to get
through.
[A5]
Metal Corrosion in Boats: The Prevention of Metal Corrosion in Hulls,
Engines, Rigging and Fittings, Nigel Warren, Sheridan House; 2nd edition
(1998) (ISBN: 1574090542)
Comments:
Very reasonable book with a lot of practical info, good buy.
[A6]
The Nature of Boats: Insights and Esoterica for the Nautically Obsessed,
Dave Gerr, International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press; 1 edition (1995)
(ISBN: 007024233X)
Comments:
Very entertaining indeed, and good book, certainly inspiring (inspired
us to build Nestor to say the
least). Very much recommended…
B. Welding
[B1] The
Welding of Aluminium and Its Alloys, Gene Mathers, CRC
Press (2002) (ISBN: 0849315514)
Comments:
Not very useful book, better to borrow from library and then decide if
its worth to spend your money on something else.
