Hand Tools

This is going to be a Bosch advertisement page. For one reason or another, we do like blue Bosch tools. In general, however, if you don't want to go nuts with constant problems, it's very advisable to have tools with a variable speed control as Aluminium often requires near to ideal cutting speeds. The blue Bosches give a good grip and have all that adjustability and dependability and other mumbo jumbo one can read from ad pages - and it really does work and pay off. Items like drill and screwdrivers are naturally not listed...

Fig. 4.3.1 Straight Grinder GGS 27 LC. Absolutely invaluable tool used with aluminium carbide cutters supplied from MA FORD. (has to be carbide and has to be designed for Alu, the standard steel would clutter). Figure shows GGS 27 LC with an adjustable planner attachment. This tool is possibly second most used hand tool after angle grinder and an absolute necessity.

Fig. 4.3.2 Angle Grinder GWS 14 125 CE and GWS 10 125 CE; we got one first, ...and a second soon after. For some reason the speed adjustable are not listed on Bosch English page, but the speed control (CE) is absolutely necessary... else you would not be able to use it with SS brushes or cutting tools etc...

Fig. 4.3.3 Circular saw... GKS 54 CE (there is a new model now - 22 July 2005) Again, there must be some bug in the UK main supply, as the CE (i.e, speed adjustable models) are not on offer in UK web page. With a ALU designed carbide 160mm saw (also from Bosch), this cuts through Aluminium plates like wood. Excellent again - blue Bosch (we are on Bosch payroll, NOT!). Very useful tool... can't see how to cut alu plates otherwise. HAS TO BE ADJUSTABLE as the cutting speed for Alu is less then for wood, if wood speed is used, the alu will melt and deposit on the carbide teeth.
Fig. 4.3.4 Jigsaw... GST 135 BCE good for trimming plates at tight corners, however, for hull building, we did not found it absolutely necessary. nice though....
Fig. 4.3.5 Back chipping machine. A home made tool for back chipping of aluminium welds - see more in welding section. In the US, the Kett tool company produces a similar machine ready made. However, they would not supply the 220V version, so we bought the gear box only...
Fig. 4.3.6 Bender... heavy built... excellent for precise bending of the frame flanges and a number of other pieces. Quite invaluable tool.
